The Shadow in the Dark.
If I ever got the game I'd totally go Byzantines. They were the true Roman wannabes.
Remnants of, more like. Until they disintegrated.

Ugh... I HATED the Senate. They sent me on the most absurd and stupid missions. Probably because I was conquering rapidly. I called them the nasty, nosy old men in robes!
The Byzantine Empire is pretty ironic. Yup, they lasted longer than the Eastern half of the Roman Empire itself. Unfortunately due to their lack to keeping up with the time and the Turks constantly at their gates, the Ottoman Empire finally took them in the mid 1400's (DANG! Pretty good run!) and took over the fabled city of Constantinople. (Which its named was from then on changed to Istanbul. My friend recently been there and she said it was marvelous. So jealous...)
I've played with Sicily and Venice from time to time. And let me say, allying with the Papal States let's you get away with murder. Train a high level assassin and when you have low favors with the Pope on the level of being excommunicated (and broken alliance), kill him. If any of the southern countries attack you I find they get their butt handed to them by the rest of the Christian countries. (Unless they are already trying to help in the 'Holy Lands')
But really, got to watch out for those inquisitors. Most have their 'sneak level' at a low point and you can usually pick them off with your own assassins. That spares you extra time to move your generals to new places and build churches. (Or cheat and use the cheat box and give them an extra piety point )
