My vampire lord does not shape-shift into a vampire lord, he IS a vampire lord. When he shape-shifts, it is into the form of a lesser vampire to blend in with the mortals when he needs to. Around the castle and when traveling, he is always in his natural vampire lord form. Occasionally he feels the need to wipe out a town or two to satisfy his immense hunger. He does not see himself as the lord of the castle or the master of the vampires that live within. He realizes that he shares the blood of a vampire lord but is still a newborn compared to the rest that have lived in the castle long before he was even born. Killing Harkon ended the monarchy that existed with this vampire clan and now there is no king of the castle, everyone is equal. The vampires all respect my vampire lord for doing this and treat him as a brother. In a sense, it is like the Companions, there is no leader, only a brother/sister hood.
