SO I bought Hjerim to do blood on the ice... Of course I investigated it and was rather annoyed I owned the house, and there was blood all over the floor, and bones and disgustingness in the hidden room. I went back to the dude, and got it all decorated up really nice.

WHen I got back, it looked beautiful, but there is still blood all over the floors, and my alchemy and enchanting room is still scattered with bones and spattered with blood and gross. Every time I go in there, I am sending crap all over the place, and cannot pick it up. WTH!!!

Also noticed for such a nice grand home, there is not much for storage and no nice center fireplace like my my Breezehome...

I play on xbox and wish I could fix stupid stuff like this. It totally sucks to go home and have to trip over bones and crap to try to enchant something or make a potion or two.

The steward should have an option to clean up the home for 500 gold. Prior to 1.4, you were out of luck if you didn't purchase this option before upgrading the house, but supposedly that was fixed so that you should be able to do so now even if you already upgraded it.

P.S. - I agree with your assessment of the house. Even cleaned up, I hate it. From a practical standpoint, the storage options suck. I basically only use it as a museum to put old armor on mannequins, weapons in the display cases and store books on the bookshelves.

I wish I got that option darned it. I will go and see if that option is available now though. I cannot seem to be able to activate the racks and things to put weapons. I was really excited when I got all the decorating options for this place, when I paid for it all, I sprinted as fast as I could to see it... My Breezehome is a much better place to be honest.

I agree Breezehome is much better. It's the only house I bothered to purchase on my second character.

I have not seen any of the others... I am slowly running out of exciting quests now at level 41... Been looking at the forums to see what else I can do that is fun and exciting.

the option will no longer be available after you have upgraded the house. However, if you have a pc you can console command it clean, look on the discussion page of uesp wiki for the codes.

You don't have to by Hjerim to do Blood and Ice, but you do have to investigate it. Depending on how you do the quest, it might be a two parter, again look it up on the wiki to see what I mean, or in the tutorial section I think.
When you eventually end up buying the house, make sure you get ALL of the decorating items, which should include the option to have the place cleaned.

That used to be the case prior to patch 1.4. This was fixed in that patch so that the order you purchased things in did not matter.

ah but if he has not patched then he needs the options above. I have not had to patch my game. Though I might for the blood on the ice, I never seem to get it to work.

hjerim is a nice display house, the hall upstairs is without a doubt the best display space in the game, that being said real men (and maidens) buy the house in markarth.

you get plenty of displays, a badass fireplace perfect for leaning up against, one level easy use layout, awesome stonework aesthetic, GREAT view of the better parts of markarth, lots of practical storage and you're own little 7000 steps pilgrimage to make you feel mysterious.

also, dwarves.

If you haven't completed blood on the ice, then the option to clean up the mess will not appear. You must complete the quest first. (not sure if you said you did or not)

I seemed to have had to buy the house in the first place to be able to do the stupid quest...

there are a couple ways to initiate the quest, one is buying/entering the house, the other is talking to a guard at a crime scene, that leads you back to the house.

Even if you buy the house, you still have to complete the quest before the option to clean the mess will appear.

I have yet to buy Hjerim. I don't care for the city of Windhelm. The snow just depresses me.But I do plan on getting it with my current character, after I finish the Imperial Legion storyline. But now I know of things to watch out for I am excited to see it furnished.
