Don’t Forget I Am Setsuna
Square-Enix’s I Am Setsuna comes out today. Do you feel Square reached its creative peak during the 90’s and that they’ve gone downhill from the PS2 onward? Then buy I Am Setsuna. Do you wish Square would return to rich characters, strong storylines and compelling game mechanics? Buy I Am Setsuna. Do you want Square to listen to you for once whenever you complain about their shortcomings? Then buy a lot of copies of I Am Setsuna. Like forty.
This is exactly the kind of game fans have wanted Square to produce. It was put together by a newly formed branch, Tokyo RPG Factory, whose sole goal is to bring back the stylings of the 16-bit golden age. They aimed to get as close to Chrono Trigger as possible with this, and many critics agree nothing can replace Chrono Trigger (but this does a good job trying). Tokyo RPG Factory would like to make more games like it. Whether they succeed or not depends on you.
The game follows the story of Setsuna, a young woman of incredible power and inner strength, on her journey of sacrifice to save the people of her land. The word “setsuna,” derived from the Japanese “setsunai,” conveys bittersweet sorrow and serves as the foundational theme of the game. The aim of the development team was to help global audiences better understand this concept through the fullness of the game.
I Am Setsuna is out today for Playstation 4 and PC (the launch trailer can be viewed below). Find it on on Steam or in the Playstation Store. Buy I Am Setsuna or forfeit your right to complain when Square releases their fourth game starring Lightning.
CORRECTION: This article originally stated a physical version of I Am Setsuna exists. Turns out this is only in Japan (for now).
