whoa guys, don't get mad over a little follower vs. follower issue. From experience, you and I have learned the only differences between followers are race, carry weight, and there profession (archer, mage, or warrior).
So are the Housecarls. If you mean that melee fighters in general get in your line of fire then you should know that you can duplicate Marcurio's fighting style with almost any follower by simply giving them a staff. The AI for many melee combat followers, including the Housecarls, prioritizes staves ahead of all other ranged weapons, even a Legendary Daedric Bow so they will happily blast away at your enemies with any destruction magic staff you give to them. They sometimes will even proactively loot them off of the dead bodies of mages to use them during combat. The thing is, Marcurio is actually good at what he does.

If you mean that they don't appear to be very good at melee combat then you simply don't know how to use melee combat followers very well.
Apparently you do since you felt compelled to respond. If you don't like Lydia that's fine, but saying "Marcurio is actually good at what he does" as if it somehow distinguishes him is pure horsepl***.Seriously, Dagmar, who the hell cares?

This thread is supposed to be about addressing follower issues. It got derailed by a rather juvenille and inaccurate off-topic statement by another poster and then got further derailed by Morgan who decided to take it further off-topic by talking about what constitutes a good follower. I tried to put it back on topic by talking about follower mechanics but if you want to make it all about follower bashing then have fun with that.

No, I'm the one pointing out game mechanics and objective information about Lydia to counter incorrect statements about her combat abilities put out by other players. Implicit in your statement that Marcurio is good at what he does is that Lydia isn't good at what she does, which simply isn't true but is a commonly held notion by players who don't understand that followers skills are supposed to level up or who don't know that the bug can be fixed with the Wabbajack or console commands. In that context statements like yours only serve to perpetuate that misguided notion not just about Lydia, but followers in general. You're the one who can't handle people not liking Lydia

jersey droppin knowledge yo!
It speaks to the fact that your playthrough pattern is fairly consistent when it comes to when you do the Dragon Rising quest and when you first walk into the Bee and Barb. As previously stated, the reason why you and many other players experience what your experiencing is because followers stats fix to their level when you first enter their cell and wont change when they level up due to their stat reset scripts being bugged. You'd more or less get the reverse results if you reversed the timeline for when you enter the Bee and Barb and when you complete Dragon Rising.Personal experience speaks volumes too...
If you load a follower with more weight than their carrying capacity by having them pick items up they sometimes wont be able to draw their weapons. As you discovered, taking the excess weight off them may not fix it. Supposedly entering a new area will fix it....I had her pick up a few dwarven metal items to change into ingots. I believe she had 4 pieces. When the dwarven spiders came, she just stood there. Did nothing to defend herself. i tried to remove the items form her inventory and she still stood there, sword sheathed even tho mine was out and battle ready...

I already posted this on the essential followers thread, but felt it needed to be posted here too, to put to rest any arguments over who the "best" followers actually are.
