Why We Won’t Be Getting Oblivion or Morrowind Remastered
If we’re getting a remastered, upgraded version of Skyrim soon, could remakes of the previous two Elder Scrolls games be far behind? Actually, no….Bethesda has no current plans to bring either of them back. As marketing boss Pete Hines explained, the reason is because getting the graphics in those two games up to snuff would require much, much more work.
“Oblivion is 10 years old, so the amount of work for that engine and that tech to bring it and remaster it and do all the things we wanted to do was significant,” Hines explained. “It’s not impossible, but it was mountainous. It was either like, go make an entire new game or do Skyrim.”
In addition, Hines said, part of the reason Bethesda chose to remaster Skyrim was because part of the job was already complete: to learn the ropes of XBox One coding, the dev team ported portions of Skyrim to the new console as a practice exercise. It made sense to finish the job.
“It just seemed to be a much closer path,” said Hines. “It was the most successful game that we had ever done before Fallout 4, so it already had a huge audience.”
Skyrim: Special Edition is coming October 28 for Playstation 4, XBox One and PC. If you already own the PC version of Skyrim with all the add-ons (or the Legendary Edition, which is the same thing), you’ll be offered a free upgrade to the Special Edition.
