Dragon Quest Movie Hits Netflix Next Month
After eleven mainline games and countless spinoffs, what’s left for Dragon Quest to do? Head to the cinemas. An animated movie based on Dragon Quest is heading to the US.
Netflix has picked up the movie and has announced a February 13 release date. Titled Dragon Quest: Your Story, it’s a loose adaptation of the Super Famicom’s Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. American DQ fans had to wait until the days of the DS to legitimately play that one. Nertflix’s official plot description is pretty light:
Luca follows in his father’s footsteps to rescue his mother from evil Ladja. Finding the heavenly hero who wields the Zenithian sword is his only hope.
The movie opened in Japanese theaters last August, but despite the prestige of its name, didn’t meet with much success. Its take in ticket sales was mediocre. Fans cried foul at the CGI art style, insisting it ruined the look of Toriyama’s character designs. There was even a lawsuit filed against Your Story from the writer of the Dragon Quest V novel, claiming the names she created were used in the movie without her permission. When it shows up on Netflix, don’t expect to be blown away. But at least it should be more uplifting than Marriage Story.
Dragon Quest: Your Story will become available on Netflix February 13, 2020. There doesn’t appear to be an English trailer, so make do with this:
