E3 2016: Dragon Quest VII For 3DS Almost Wasn’t Released Here
Dragon Quest VII originally came out for the Playstation in 2001. Now a new version with upgraded visuals (and stereoscopic 3D) is heading to the 3DS this September, thanks to a localization partnership between Square and Nintendo.
The Nintendo Treehouse spent a half-hour’s time with Dragon Quest VII at E3 along with members of the development team. One of the more interesting things they mentioned had nothing to do with the gameplay at all: this version of DQ VII almost never made it outside Japan.
The team from Square mentioned that there were no plans for the company to release Dragon Quest VII for 3DS in America due to the large amount of text in the game and the massive effort it would take to translate it. What changed their mind was fan demand. They mention specifically a petition that caught their attention, as well as fan letters that were sent in.
There you are — confirmed proof that it works! But what works even better is buying the game. If they don’t see the return on their investment they’re anticipating, they won’t be fooled by a fan petition twice. Dragon Quest VII comes out for 3DS September 16, 2016.
