Darkmoon Skooma, or simply "Darkmoon" as it is known as around Tamriel, is the newest in designer drugs available to the people of Skyrim. The pre-existing versions of skooma are regular Skooma, and Double Refined Skooma. According to many NPC's in Skyrim, the Skooma is weak, and (possibly) as a result, the skooma trade has gone without much scrutiny. Heck even some of the taverns/inns have it stocked on their shelves along with the meads and wines.

Darkmoon is different. It's much more potent drug to consume, and its production is much more illegal than regular or double refined versions of skooma (for reasons outlined below). This is because of the ingredients found in Darkmoon.

Like all skooma, the base of the drug is Moon Sugar. Combined with this is the Nightshade plant, the poisonous yet fragrant herb. Added to these standard skooma ingredients are crushed full black soul gems. This is the so called "secret ingredient" which causes Darkmoon to get its deep purple sparkle as well as its extreme potency. Due to the inclusion of black soul gems, the drug requires souls to make, adding to the illegalities involved in its production.

It also must be noted that the ingestion of skooma, orally or through smoking is actually ingesting a soul in the process, which would likely be considered a crime against nature. This factors greatly into the price of producing large quantities of the drug, due to the producer needing a large quantity of both black soul gems and souls.

I think that the recipe needs one more herb needs to be included. Nightshade has an effect priority 1: damage health.

"The name and shape of this plant are known to all; long understood to be one of the more potent components in many poisons, the average Nord keeps his distance from the bright purple flowers nestled among dark leaves. It is exceedingly effective as a pure poison, but can also be combined with other compounds to stiffen joints as well. It is thus favored amongst those who wish to disable their opponents in battle, and can be found coating the blades of many of the more unsavory characters in Skyrim." - Agneta Falia in Herbalist's Guide to Skyrim.(http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Nightshade)

The other herb that I believe should be added is Thistle Branch. It has a priority 3 effect of resist poison and it's magnitude is the highest of any of the other ingredients which share this effect. This addition will negate enough of the damage health induced by Nightshade that the Darkmoon will become the most sought after by those individuals who choose to consume it.

The implications of how much that this addition to the game as a mod are very great. I would like to see many of the members of this fantastic forum become involved in the development of this project.

Dawnguard added redwater skooma, something to keep in mind.

Really interesting. But also something to note, when a soul gem is destroyed (through enchanting or any other process) the should is actually transferred to a plane of oblivion, as outlined in dawn guard. However, it does require someone to die, which is interesting.
Some other ideas I would include would possibly be nirnroot? Toxic, yet glowing it could very well serve as an interesting ingredient.

By comparison, it takes roughly 2000 lbs of coca leaves to make 2.5 pounds of cocaine... Just ideas.
