Final Fantasy XIV Might Be Coming To XBox One
It had a rocky beginning, but Final Fantasy XIV has remained steady on Playstation 3, Playstation 4 and PC since 2013. Now Square’s MMO could be growing further, as rumor has it an XBox version of the game could finally become a possibility.
What held up FFXIV’s release on XBox One was the lack of cross-platform play. Three years ago, it was unheard of on the console. Now, however, Microsoft is much more open to the idea and has already allowed it for several third-party games.
“Microsoft actually approached the Final Fantasy 14 team about the cross-platform opportunity,” director Naoki Yoshida said to Polygon. “When our team reviewed the regulations that are associated with that, we realized that Microsoft may not have the experience or understanding of running an MMORPG as an online game genre just yet. The Final Fantasy 14 team has fed back to Microsoft that there are certain elements of its regulations that we would have to consider waived. We’re waiting on Microsoft’s response for that, but we are having discussions.”
If the roadblocks Yoshida mentioned can be removed, we could be seeing an XBox version of FFXIV soon. But, uh….with all this focus on the current gen, does that mean the Playstation 3 version could be left behind? “At this point, we’ve already declared that we’ll continue to fully support the PS3 through the 3.x series of patches,” Yoshida said. “That’s about all we can say at this point. If anything changes with that, we’ll be sure to update our players so that they are aware.”
