Bethesda Game’s Montreal Studio to Unionize
A union organizing drive has been initiated at Bethesda Game Studios Montreal. Video game companies have faced a lot of turmoil in recent years. Jobs have been lost and studios have closed, including Bethesda’s Montreal office.
Bethesda Game Studios Montreal announced the company’s unionization. In a social media post, The studio filed for certification from the Quebec Labour Board, aiming to join the Canadian branch of Communications Workers of America. This move reflects the state of the video game industry, with Xbox‘s closing four Bethesda studios.
There was a wave of layoffs that continued to occur regardless of how popular the studios where a developer worked. Because these layoffs were unpredictable, developers and fans alike began to lose faith in the security of the video game industry.
The gaming industry has also faced issues such as layoffs, crunch, discrimination, and a struggle for fair wages. Although unionization has been difficult, workers have often turned to it as a last resort.
Vodeo Games became the first studio in the North American gaming industry to unionize in 2021. As time passes, more workers are seeking unionization as a way to avoid further problems.
