Rosealia's Journal
Background: Rosealia’s parents emigrated from Daggerfell and settled in Karthwasten. They’ve had to work hard for as Rosealia can remember, but they’d always find the time to tell her stories before she went sleep. She got her hands on any magic book she could get her hands on. Despite studying whenever she could, she doesn’t have much experience with magic. Most of the experience she does have is from healing injured miners. She’s spent her entire life around the mines and once she turned 16, she started working in the mines with her parents. The longer she stayed in Karthwasten, the more trapped she felt. Not wanting to remain and work at the mine her entire life, Rosealia has set off with visions of grand adventure.
Notes: I’m pretty new to Skyrim in general but I really wanted to try to catalog a new character as a journal. My plan for Rosealia is for her to eventually become a vampire. She will not only be my first vampire, but also my first pure magic build. I’m going to be learning how to do this as I go along so I may change restrictions around. I plan on trying to get her turned fairly early. From there she will have to balance hiding her affliction and adventuring. She’ll live/camp in the wilderness and try to spend only as much time as she needs in towns. I don’t have Dawnguard, so she’ll need to feed in order to avoid detection. Also obviously spoilers if you've never played the game.
Name: Rosealia

- If I die, I must spend several hours eating and recovering
- Once a spell is learned from a tome, 24 hours must pass before I can start using the spell

The house was quiet this morning as I double checked my bag. During breakfast everyone was talking about the mine shutting down and seemed to be avoiding my eyes. I wonder if they think I should wait for the mine to reopen before l leave, but who knows how long that will be. Besides I shall send as much as I can spare once I start earning some gold on the road. I turned to say one last good bye when my mother said she had a present for me. She went to her bed and pulled a robe from underneath the bedding. She says she’s been sewing it for me to use on my journey. I started crying and I accepted the robes with a thank you and a hug. Dad told me to write to them when I could. Then the other miners in the house took their turns saying good bye. Belchimac told me if I wanted to leave Karthwasten so bad, I should go find a rich noble to marry. I know he means no harm and I smiled and thanked him. Ragnar shook my hand and wished me luck. Even Lash was surprisingly sentimental. She gave me her old pickaxe and told me if I was ever in need of Septims, I couldn’t go wrong with mining.

As I started walking through town, Ainethach stopped me. He asked if I wanted to be an adventurer I should prove I could handle it by convincing those Silver-Blood Mercenaries to leave. I didn’t want to look weak and I wanted to help my town so I agreed. As I walked into the mine I knew so well, mercenaries tried to convince me to turn back. But I held my head high and tried to look confident. I approached the boss, Atar, and he commanded I leave. I tried reasoning him, warned him that the entire town was unhappy with his presence and even said Ainethach would pay him to leave. The man kept insisting that the only thing that would appease him was Ainethach agreeing to sell his land. Finally I think he got tired of me bugging him because he called his men and they all started attacking me. Terrified, I tried to remember my studies and I called my wolf familiar. I used my flame spell until my magicka was exhausted. Not knowing what to do, I ran. Ran out the mine, the mercenaries chased me through town but everyone was still inside so no one came to help. My lungs were burning and I knew I couldn’t run forever. I ran behind a rock and crouched down. Taking a couple seconds to catch my breath, I surprised Atar who had separated from the other mercenaries. I shot fire at him while flitting about, dodging his blows. It was over quickly, as he stopped writhing, I stood there and stared at him. I should have felt something; sadnes, fear, even anger at that moment, but all I felt was numb. His men found me and I killed them too, just like I had killed Atar.
The fight had gone to rocky fields surrounding the town and as I started the walk back all I could think of was those men burning alive. Ainethach was thrilled his mine was clear, but I think I saw some fear in his eyes. Fear of me? He gave me 400 Septims, far more than I make in months of mining. As he went to tell everyone the good news, I left. I don’t think I could have handled them looking at me, knowing I had killed several men. Would they be proud? Would my parents be angry or just sad? I don’t think I want to know. With no destination in mind, I began to walk northeast. I traveled alongside the river until I came upon an empty camp. I looked around but didn’t see any travelers about. There was a journal that indicated the occupants of the camp where hunting something. I do hope they’re alright; Skyrim can be a dangerous place. Hopefully they won’t mind, but I sat on a bedroll and ate the bread I had packed. My legs were already getting sore and my head hurt. I’m not used to expending that much magicka in one day. I watched the winds blow through the long grass and the deer graze. This I was used to. Karthwasten sits on a hill overlooking yellow plains.

I got up and continued on until I spotted a very impressive looking bridge, decorated with a carving of a dragon’s head. I crossed the bridge to find a fairly small lumber mill town. Most of the villagers were very friendly and I enjoyed my time there. Many were worried about the war. I told them I wanted no part in either side and I just wanted the conflict to end as quickly and peacefully as possible. There was a child who said I looked like a soldier. I looked at my simple robes and lack of weapons, and I wasn’t sure what he meant. Another woman came up to me and started complaining about her husband’s drinking. I talked to the husband and he complained just as much about her. The wife wanted me to find his alcohol stash, but I didn’t want to get involved.

A very pleasant Redguard named Azzada confided in me that he used to be an orphan living on the streets of Markarth. The kindness of one man saved his life. Now Azzada has a wife and family, but he’s worried about them. He tells me the dragons have come back and no one knows what will happen to Skyrim. This is the first I’ve heard of the dragons coming back and I’m unsure whether to believe Azzada. He seems like an honest man, but he could be misinformed. I wished him well and went to check out the Inn. I bought dinner from Faida. As I ate she chatted about the lastest gossip she’d heard. She said something about bandits and the Dark Brotherhood but I was only half listening. I decided to rent a room for the night. I probably could have gotten a couple of more hours of walking in, but I was tired. I have a room to myself, something I’ve never had the luxury of. My family lived in the basement level of the house we shared with Lash, Belchimac and Ragnar. I’m having trouble falling asleep, my mind plays over Atar and the mercenaries burning to death. The smell of burnt flesh, hair and bubbling fat. I tell myself it was in self-defense but I’m worried. This trip has already changed me and not for the better.

I’ve reached Solitude; I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s enormous, the buildings are like nothing I’ve seen before and there are so many people. I can’t believe I’m in the capital. It’s amazing how warm and clear it is here compared to the south road I was just on. I spent yesterday trekking through the snowy forest. Eventually the snow became so heavy I could hardly see. Fortunately I stumbled upon a grotto surrounded by wrecked ships. Unfortunately the people inside weren’t happy to see me. Several men rushed at me, weapons drawn. I called my wolf familiar and my hands lit with flames. The wolf jumped on one of the men and started tearing at him. I shot flames at the other two men. They kept advancing, swords drawn. I backed up and shot fire at them both. One managed to hit me and I furiously tried to remember my healing spell. The wolf had finished off the one he’d attacked and rushed to my rescue. Together we finished them off. I healed my wound and looked around. I was standing on a rickety dock, surrounded by blue-green water. I explored the rest of the place, only to find more mercenaries. With my wolf familiar by my side, we cleared the place.

I didn’t feel as guilty this time. I was starting to learn the rules of Skyrim. I wanted to live to see my family again and these people had tried to kill me. I searched the lower docks and found a wanted poster. Apparently the leader of this group had a bounty on his head. I spent the day resting in the grotto, waiting for the snow to slow down. This morning I continued heading north and reached the stables in front Solitude. The family there was very nice, though I politely declined when they asked if I wanted to buy a horse. They wished me well and told me to appreciate the view. I walked up the road and looked down at the valley. They had been right; the view was breathtaking in the early morning light. But as soon as I went through the gates, I saw a crowd gathered in the city square. I went closer and saw that guards were about to execute a man. As the executor brought his axe down, I averted my eyes. Most of the crowd seemed pleased with the execution. I heard a crunch and everyone started to disperse. I talked to the people who hung around and it turns out the prisoner, Roggvir, had helped Ulfric escape after he killed the High King. This war is claiming so many lives; I’m not sure what side to stand on.

I met a woman named Angela who runs an alchemy shop. She was a lovely old woman and she told me more about the war. Angela was very worried about her daughter, Fura, who had joined the Legion. I assured her that I would ask the soldiers for news. I headed back outside and headed over to the where I saw Imperial Soldiers training. I started asking around for Captain Aldis, the soldier Angela had said to look for. With some persuasion he told me Fura was dead and he hadn’t the heart to tell Angela yet. With a heavy heart I went back to tell Angela the bad news. She was devastated but it seemed like she’d be expecting to hear bad news. I gave her a hug and left her alone with her grief. I headed towards the Palace to talk to Falk Firebeard, the man is said to return to on the wanted poster. The palace felt unnaturally cool and had a strange musty odor. I walked up the steps and heard my steps echo throughout the hall. I saw a man arguing with the court about a cave. When he left, I approached the Jarl. She motioned for me to talk to the man on her left. He introduced himself as Falk Firebeard. I told him I had killed Captain Hargar and he gave me a reward. He also asked if I wanted to investigate WolfSkull Cave and I agreed. He turned away and I bought some spells from the court wizard. She’s a frightening woman but she knows a lot about magic.

I went back outside and started reading my new healing tome. I ran into a bard and he dropped the books he’d been carrying. I apologized profusely and helped him pick up his books. He told me the least I should do was help him carry the books back to the Bard College. I grabbed and armful and followed him. It wasn’t long before we reached a side door of a large building with a tower. As I was putting the books down, the leader told me about a lost verse they needed for a ceremony. I told him I’d be happy to help.

21st of Last Seed

I woke at dawn and ate breakfast at the tavern. I paid the innkeeper and set off to find the lost verse for the Bards College. According to my map, Dead Men’s Respite was to the south. There was a damp chill in the air and rain clouds loomed overhead. I walked back down the road, past Katla’s farm. Rather than take the path through Dragonbridge I decided to take a shortcut through the marsh. I took off my boots and rolled up my robe so the bottom wouldn’t drag in the water. The ground squished as I walked, making any sort of stealth impossible. I was attacked by several wild animals, including a strange insect but I’ve found my flames work well against most things. As I walked, the fog started to clear and soon I was in a forest. I heard barking and went to see if a hunter and his dog were nearby. I found a dog but he was thin and scraggly looking. He saw me and barked once before bounding through the underbrush. I ran after him until he stopped at a rundown house. Inside was a dead Nord whose journal told me the dog was Meeko and he was left alone when the man had died. I gave the dog some venison and he started following me. I think he was lonely and hungry. The rest of the trip was uneventful and by midday we had reach Dead Man’s Respite.

A ghost led me through the crypt. Spiders and draugr were everywhere and extremely aggressive. I found out Meeko can hold his own in a fight, although he jumped around so much it was hard to avoid hitting him as well. A ghost seemed to be trying to lead us somewhere and I followed. I don’t know if his intentions are good but he hasn’t proven himself evil yet. Besides I get lost so easily it’s nice to have a guide. I came across swinging blades blocking the path so I ordered Meeko to stay while I found a way around the blades. Once I found the chain to turn them off, I went back and fetched Meeko. We crept carefully up the stairs and into the next room.

The gates dropped down and I found myself surrounded by draugr. With a shout, I called my wolf familiar and lit my hands with flames. They came from every direction, growling like rabid dogs. Meeko rushed them, trying to draw some from me. The wolf howled and grabbed a draugr by the leg. I burned them as they closed in, trying to dodge their blows. But there were too many of them and all of us were in rough shape. I desperately tried out my new healing spell and managed to heal Meeko’s major wounds. The draugr didn’t seem to like that and they focused on me again. With a yelp, I focused the flames back onto them. Their dry flesh caught fire easily and they burned away into ash. I sat down heavily and called Meeko over to me. The fight had taken its toll on him and he was covered in cuts. I called the healing hands back and sealed up his wounds. The new skin was pink and showed through his fur but he looked perkier. I have him a piece of dry beef and he settled down. I was exhausted and hungry as well so I ate cheese and bread. It’s hard to keep track of time down here but I know it’s been hours since I arrived.

Stairs in the middle of the room spiraled downward. The ghost led me to the room the lost verse was in. I picked it up and got ready to head back but the ghost directed me onwards. I came to a hallway blocked by a stone door. The ruby claw I had found in the beginning was the key. As the door opened with a groan, the ghost appeared again. Our party was met with a vast room full of draugr. As they advanced I called my familiar again. The two canines charged, tearing into mummified skin. I shot fire with my right hand while keeping a healing spell ready in my left. My spells are getting more powerful with practice and we took down the draugr with more ease. When the last draugr fell, King Olaf answered the ghost’s challenge.

Olaf focused his wrath on the ghost so I was free to shoot spells at him. Unfortunately he eventually took notice of me. His blows cracked the stone around me as I dodged. I had exhausted my magicka but Olaf kept on going. Desperate I grabbed a sword one of the slain draugr had dropped. I clumsily lashed out, backing away with each blow. Perhaps not my brightest idea because before I knew it I was backed up against a wall. The ghost came up from behind like, well like a ghost, and chopped off Olaf’s head. I had faced death too many times today for my liking. The ghost vanished with a smile, leaving Meeko and I alone. I found a key on King Olaf’s body that opened a passageway leading to the first room.
I stepped outside and took a deep breath. So nice to breathe fresh air. It was clearly hours past nightfall and I hoped to find a place to sleep. Several minutes later I encountered a frightened woman in rags. She told me that bandits had kidnapped her but she had escaped. She said there was a town nearby and asked if I escort her. I wanted to find an inn anyway and I wholeheartedly agreed to help the poor woman. I’m sorry to say after escaping the torment of those bandits, she did not survive her trip to safety. A bear came out of nowhere and flung her like a ragdoll. Meeko and I killed it but the woman had died instantly. I didn’t even know her name but I had failed her. I prayed to Arkay to watch over her and lay a flower on her body. It wasn’t long before I found the town she was talking about. Morthal it’s called. I’ve rented a room and hopefully I’ll get a few hours of sleep before dawn. I fear draugr and that frightened woman will visit my dreams tonight.
