The Scaled Arcanist
I've only just recently gotten into roleplaying my characters on Skyrim, but on my most recently created character, Virees, The Scaled Arcanist, I must admit that I am having the most fun. I hadn't realised the depth roleplaying a character bought into Skyrim, I went to the trouble of making him a backstory too.

I was just wondering what the backstory of your Skyrim characters is? Did you put thought and time into it? And do you follow what you written about them?

Irish

Thane of Solitude
Here is a brief summary of Anja's (my main character) backstory:

"Anja was born in Helgen, Skyrim to Nadja, a member of the Thieves Guild, and Borli, the village blacksmith. Owing to her parents always being busy with their respective professions, Anja was left in the care of Angi's parents and the two quickly became best friends. The two spent most of their youth practicing archery and soon began to hunt game. By the age of 17, both girls had become the best marksmen in Helgen.

At 19, her mother arranged for her to meet Erikur, son of rich merchants from Solitude. Although Erikur was verbally violent with her, she saw a potential marriage with him as an opportunity to leave Helgen and thought that he would take her to new places and on adventures. This proved to be false, however, and he demanded she make appearances at the Blue Palace and to be seen and not heard. Bored with her lifestyle and fed up with her cheating spouse (Erikur had a fondness for Wood Elves), Anja sets off from Solitude in hopes of making a more exciting life for herself."

Anja is the character I've spent the most amount of time on and is also my RP character. I admit, I've had a lot of fun creating her to be as realistic as possible from her habits to her appearance to her personality quirks. For the most part, I stick to her story in-game, though I've made a few tweaks here and there.

Well here is my current RP playthrough: Zhar (A common name for my Khajiit characters)

Zhar is a white Khajiit with black markings, long pointed ears donned with earrings and a moustache decorated with gold rings. He is of a muscular build and his green eyes penetrate the soul. He is a warrior of the Empire. I wear the Imperial Dragon Armor mod which looks like the standard heavy imperial armor but ebony and gold, wielding the same type of gladius.

Zhar is a Dragon Champion, a fictitious outfit within the Legion that is essentially the best of the best, having only five champions. Story goes that he is the only beast race (argonian or khajiit) with the title. The other four champions are an Imperia knight from royal lineage, a Breton spellsword, and Imperial legion veteran, and an Orc warrior. All are standard affair for the Legion. Zhar had proved himself through many battles to be a natural combatant with great ferocity. The other champions are uneasy of Zhar due to the primal state he falls into during his bloodlust. That being said he was sent to Skyrim to defeat those rising up against the Empire. A rather cruel test of his talents for the Nords are famous for having great ferocity in battle

Kohlar the Unkilled

Time for some ale
I always put a lot of thought into developing my characters. Kohlar's blog is less of a journal, and more a summery of his philosophies. For those who are interested: http://skyrimforum.com/blog/kohlar-the-unkilled.40642/ Little is known of his life before arriving in Skyrim. I am enjoying his developing saga.

My previous and first character, Kor, had more of an actual back story, but I had to alter the games' lore to allow for the existence of a Klingon in Skyrim. Never back down from a fight, and live to die in battle. Standard Klingon philosophy. Copied from another post I made about him: Kor was sucked through a temporal distortion and pulled into an alternate universe, a strange land with strange people and stranger beasts, where he discovers he's about to be executed. Before he gets the chance to kill his captors, some flying monstrosity does most of the work for him. Kor learns of the war and decides that this might not be so bad after all. He joins the empire and sees it as his fate to become this world's equivalent to Kahless. He discovers the orcs, and although not Klingon, they seem somehow related, as if perhaps ancient ancestors that were pulled through a similar portal, eons ago.

raido KASAI

Ansei Master Badass
raidoportrait-1.jpg

This is my favorite RPG character I've had to date, likely due to the ungodly number of Skyrim hours I've spent with him. I've got a pretty fully fleshed out back story. This may be a bit long so I'll break it into 2 parts, the time before the intro scene en-route to Helgen and the time after...

This is Kasai Raido. His name translates as "fire (more accurately, 'inferno') rider"

At the start of the Skyrim storyline he is a 20-year old Redguard from the island of Stros M'kai in Hammerfell. He was the firstborn son of storied privateer father, Shinji Raido, and an skilled Altmer mystic mother, Kena Stormbinder who was a covert dissident against the Thalmor. Kasai learned from Quarnir during the Eye of Magnus incident in Winterhold that his mother had been a counselor from the Order to his father working to subvert the Dominion.

His father was a highly skilled swordsman who spent much of his time at sea leading raids on Thalmor supply lines in and out of Hammerfell and the empire controlled territories. When not being a royal pain for the Thalmor, Shinji could be found practicing the art of swordsmanship. In the loot picked up in one raid, Shinji discovered a 1E scroll that was a copy of "the Book of Circles" the ancient work of Yokundan/Redguard hero, Frandar Hunding which was an epic teaching many sword techniques and explaining the old Ansei Warrior "Shehai" master technique where the warrior learns to manifest a spirit sword using energy from their own soul that is far more powerful than even the most expertly crafted physical weapon. He studied the old Ansei teachings and had some success with learning shehai, but never fully could master it. Kasai learned much from his father and through relentless meditation and self-study, he later (after Helgen scene time-wise) mastered the shehai technique his father was never able to fully achieve.

When Kasai was 13, his parents were killed in front of him in an ambush in Hunding Bay by the Thalmor disguised as an imperial ship in distress. To make it worse, it was pretty obvious that the Thalmor agents had some level of assistance from the empire. Kasai and his younger brother, Satoro (then age 9) escaped. The rest of the crew including both their parents did not make it off alive. Left to fend for themselves, they made a living by working odd jobs and later forming a small band of bounty hunters with a group of friends they met over the next handful of years. For a while, Kasai had sort of a family again, but fate ultimately had different ideas.

A little over 6 years after witnessing the death of his parents, Kasai found himself totally alone again. His group of friends were hunting in the border area territory when they got caught in the middle of the skirmish that landed the empire the leader of the Stormcloaks. All but Kasai were killed by Imperial soldiers who assumed they were in with the rebel group. For Kasai, as bad as witnessing the death of his parents was, this was far worse. He always believed that the ultimate duty of an older brother was to protect the younger. His inability to do so still haunts him....

"Zu'u Alduin. Zok sahrot do naan ko Lein!"
I haven't started playing with this character yet as he's my "canon" Dovahkiin and I want to get everything in order first but here's the big picture:

Agronak is a 25 year old Orc born in Cyrodiil, named after his ancestor the Gray Prince. His father was a legionnaire while his mother was a smith, who he learned to fight and smith from respectively. His two siblings were both older than him, with his brother a member of the Fighter's Guild and his sister following their father's footsteps and was on the path to becoming a legionnaire herself. He meanwhile was still unsure of his place in the world as while he enjoyed blacksmithing and a good fight every now and then, he couldn't see himself doing that for the rest of his life.

He decided to steer away from the traditional Orc careers and joined the College of Whispers to learn more about magic, specifically Destruction and Restoration. Unfortunately he left before he learned more than a few basic spells as he felt he and his fellow students deserved better quality education than the college was willing to give out. Seeing as how the Synod weren't much better and he was lost in life yet again, he would eventually change his mind about becoming a legionnaire however as he caught wind of the assassination of King Torygg in the north.

Although he was born after the Great War, he still saw the effects it had on the survivors and it molded him into a man who would go out of his way to aid others whenever they needed it, though it also gave him a somewhat negative opinion of High Elves. It was this characteristic in him that compelled him to travel to Skyrim, as he believed that a united Empire would be better for everyone and wished to help end Ulfric's Rebellion. He wasn't off to a very good start however as he ended up in an Imperial ambush along with the very same man he had been hoping to stop.

That's pretty much it for his past, not all that dramatic I know but I wanted it to be one of those "greatness from humble beginnings" stories. I'll make another post later about his current life in Skyrim and why he makes the seemingly contradictory choices he makes.

It's a big hammer.
I always come up with an elaborate story for my characters. One time I spent a lot of time researching race life spans in order to properly play a Dunmer who would have blood ties to Katariah and her son Cassynder. Having even a hint of Tiber Septim blood in me made it seem so much more plausible that I was Dragonborn.

Most of my Nords, though, are usually born in Bruma and end up on their own after a Thalmor raid. You know, "one of those purges we never hear about". I'm one of those people who've made way too many characters, so I wouldn't even know which one to explain in much detail. Often times, though, my characters father would have been from Skyrim, but fought in the Great War, then settled in Bruma, became a blacksmith, married a woman from Bruma, and then had a kid. That is the general, most basic storyline for my characters. From there, it goes in all different directions. Maybe the father hated the Empire for all the sacrifices that were made during the war only to turn on Talos. Maybe sometimes they were understanding to what the Empire did. Sometimes, they're indifferent. I'm really sure for one character, the parents didn't want the child and sold it to a bunch of Khajiit traders for a nice penny... :D That one became leader of the Thieves Guild. ;)

Crassius Granius, an Imperial born at the start of the Great War. His father was a great general in the Imperial army, his mother was a merchant and a mage, she owned a shop in the Imperial city. Crassius' father died in the Great War. His parents both believed in Talos as a god, but Crassius didn't, some Thalmor dogma rubbed off on him when he was growing up. He had always felt trapped in the Imperial city because he felt so weighed down by the Thalmor's rule. Crassius trained with sword and crossbow and learned to sneak from the old Legion veterans that were his father's old friends. He learned the magic of Illusion, Alteration and Restoration from his mother, he also picked up alchemy and enchanting from her. He fought and trained in what was left of the arena, he loved it there. His only other escape from Thalmor oppression were his books, he enjoyed reading after a long day of work or training. He helped his mother tend her shop. He left the Imperial city because he couldn't take being trapped under the boot of the Thalmor anymore, so he went North to Skyrim to be a traveling Merchant. He took his father's old armor and Elven weapons which were a crossbow and shortsword. He also took his mother's Amulet of Talos, which he doesn't wear very often, for his own protection. He is not a racist, but he has certain beliefs about other races, he finds some of their cultures a bit distasteful. But he is starting to like the Nords, despite their reputation.

I always give some backstory to my characters. Except the one I'm currently obsessed with...
Vaerwen the Bosmer woke up on the wagon to Helgen, and couldn't remember anything about herself. So she keeps a journal to remember everything that happens next. In the first days on her own, she was interested in discovering things about her personality and skills, but after months being absorbed in the Dark Brotherhood, she decided she knew herself well enough to be satisfied.
Maybe I'll have her remember things later and change-up her morals or something. It's refreshing to approach a character's story this way.

I had no back story in the beginning, to make matters worse, I chose a cumbersome name for my character. Her name was Ji'ardl. She is a Redguard, but her mother was a Breton. Her father was a merchant and was especially good at buying and selling horses. So she was a natural with the horses. Plus her older brothers taught her basic swordsmanship. Unfortunately her father arranged a marriage for her to get some some horses and merchandise.

So she snuck out one night when a Khajit caravan was leaving the area after doing some business with their village. She begged them to let her come along and after being shortchanged by her father they were amused to find she was his daughter. So they let her come along as far as Southern Skyrim. She was hoping to get stable work or apprentice for a mage since her father forbade any magika in his abode. Her mother kept her own ability hidden and it waned with disuse. She wanted her daughter to be able to use what her Breton side gave her. So once on she was the road she changed her name to a more Breton sounding one: Giadriel.

She wandered about and then offered to help this group of Stormcloaks that had a lame horse. And... well you know the rest.

I don't have a backstory to my character. In fact, my character doesn't have a "skyrim name". I'm just doing jobs around Riverwood at the minute getting enough money together to purchase the property in Riften. I'm hoping to make my character join the Thieves Guild eventually. So I will be using stealth and archery. Also for hunting. Not sure if I should use smithing or use what I find. Not got the thief style pinned down yet. Need some help.
